The Tucson APA

The American Poolplayers Association of Tucson, AZ is the biggest pool league in the city! 8-Ball, 9-Ball, Scotch Doubles and Masters divisions play all over town Sunday thru Thursday. The League Operators: Brandon and Adrianne Ferguson, and Andrew Vasek moved to Tucson from Austin, TX in February of 2004 specifically to rejuvenate the APA Pool League here in Tucson. At the time, the League had suffered from a 2-year hiatus and was never able to grow beyond 20 teams. Now, we're proud to tell you that the Tucson APA is by far the BIGGEST Pool League in Tucson with nearly 100 teams and over 600 active members. "We had so much fun playing in the APA in Texas, we wanted to share those experiences with the people in Tucson" said League Operator, Adrianne Ferguson. "Austin was a great town, but we love it here in Tucson and we're here to stay!"

Each APA team consists of 5-8 players of friends, family, or co-workers. Teams pay a low weekly fee of $30 per team ($6 per player) plus a $25 annual membership fee. These teams compete in local divisions where APA Host locations are grouped geographically to minimize traveling distance. Each league year is divided into 3 sessions, with each session running from 12 to 16 weeks. Teams may play any day, Sunday through Thursday in most areas, so it's easy to fit the APA into your schedule.

The Local Tucson APA awards nearly $20,000 per year! This includes trips to Las Vegas earned at the Vegas or Bust City Championships (which awards almost $12,000), the Big Money Tournaments (which award $5000 per year), 8-Ball & 9-Ball Doubles Vegas Qualifiers (which award $1500 per year), Jack & Jill Vegas Qualifiers (which award $1000 per year), and our bi-annual Top Gun Tourneys. Winning teams compete for the right to represent Tucson in Las Vegas at the APA National Team Championships where their hotel and travel fees are PAID by the Tucson APA League Office! There are also player achievement patches, trophies, cue sticks, local discounts and much more benefits for our members.

History Of The APA

The American Poolplayers Association was founded in 1979 by professional poolplayers Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart (pictured left). The two men realized the popularity of the sport and knew that, unlike other sports, there was no existing recreational league system. Back then the league was called the National Pool League. The name was changed to American Poolplayers Association (APA) in 1981.

Over the years, the APA Pool League has gone by many names, including The American Pool League, Busch Pool League, and Bud Light Pool League. Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart maintain positions on the APA's Board of Directors, and strive to create continued interest and growth in the sport of pool.

Renee Lyle, (pictured right), has held the position of APA President since April of 1995. As President, she has the responsibility of overseeing the daily operations and future growth of the League. She was appointed to her position by former APA President Terry Bell, when he stepped down to assume a position on the Board Of Directors.

The APA Nationally

Today the APA has grown to over 270,000 members. The league boasts more members than all other "national" leagues combined. APA Pool Leagues are administered locally by a network of League Operators. They conduct weekly leagues in both 8-Ball and 9-Ball team formats. The APA currently has League Operator opportunities available in other states for those who wish to be their own boss, and promote the sport of pool.

APA leagues play across the United States, Canada, and Japan. Teams compete weekly in 8-Ball and 9-Ball leagues with all teams having the opportunity to advance to the APA's National Team Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.

At the national level, the APA guarantees nearly $1.5 Million in national tournament prize money. This consists of the APA National Team Championships, the $200,000 APA 8-Ball Singles Classic, the $100,000 APA 9-Ball Singles Shootout, and finally the MiniMania Tournaments, that paid out over $200,000 last year at the National Team Championships.

The APA also conducts the U.S. Amateur Championship, the world's most prestigious amateur tournament. It is the only tournament conducted by the APA that is open to members and non-members alike.
